Biography

Neil Safier is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Brown University and serves as the Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the Watson Institute for International Affairs. He holds affiliations with the Department of Hispanic Studies, the Institute for the Study of the Environment and Society, and the Program in Science, Technology, Society, and the Native American Indigenous Studies Initiative. Safier received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 2004 and has held teaching and research positions at various prestigious institutions, including the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of 'Measuring the New World: Enlightenment Science in South America' and has been awarded the Gilbert Chinard Prize. Safier encourages inquiries from graduate students interested in history, science, and knowledge-making in a global context, particularly as it pertains to the environmental history of the Atlantic world.
