Neil T. Smith is a composer and researcher based in Edinburgh. He primarily composes acoustic music for a wide variety of forces and has worked with several leading ensembles in the UK and Germany, including the WDR Sinfonie Orchester, Schlagquartett Köln, Red Note ensemble, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. As a post-doctoral researcher at the Maastricht Centre for Innovation in Classical Music (MCICM) from 2018 to 2022, he studied the role of concert halls in contemporary society. He has taught at Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Nottingham and completed his AHRC-funded PhD on the German composer Mathias Spahlinger under the supervision of Professor Robert Adlington. His interest in German music was sparked during his Master’s studies with Caspar Johannes Walter at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. His academic work includes research on contemporary music culture and composition, with publications in journals such as TEMPO, Contemporary Music Review, and Music & Letters. He also co-authored a chapter titled ‘Music Buildings’ for the forthcoming Routledge Companion to Applied Musicology. Neil’s composition 'Aphelion' was selected as part of the Scottish submission to the ISCM this year, and his solo clarinet piece 'Strange Machines' was released on a CD by Dark Inventions, receiving a review in TEMPO.
