Biography

Nele Famaey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KU Leuven, specialized in the Biomechanics Section. Her research focuses on advanced soft tissue biomechanics, emphasizing computer simulations of clinical situations to assist in medical device design and clinical decision-making. She leads the Soft Tissue Biomechanics Group and FIBEr, the Core Facility for Biomechanical Experimentation at KU Leuven. Famaey also holds a visiting professorship at the University of Ghent within the BioMMeda group. Her work involves the biofidelic mechanical characterization of soft biological tissues, addressing the challenges in modeling the behavior of cardiovascular systems, cartilage, and brain tissues under various conditions. Famaey's contributions have been recognized through various projects and publications in high-impact journals, underscoring her dedication to advancing the field of biomechanics and contributing to health engineering solutions.
