Nelleke Oostdijk researches predefined linguistic patterns used to automatically extract information from large amounts of text. For example, her method enables investigative authorities to detect tweets that contain threatening language amidst millions of tweets. As a computational linguist, her main research interests are centered around language use variation, the role of expert (linguistic) knowledge, text mining, information retrieval, and the creation and curation of language resources. She is an affiliated researcher at the Centre Language Studies (CLS) in the research group Language Speech Technology and serves as the chair of the advisory board for the Centre Language Speech Technology (CLST). Starting September 1, 2024, she will be the coordinator of the research master program in Linguistics and Communication Sciences and will also be a teacher ambassador at the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC). Her recent work includes the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions project HYBRIDS, aimed at combating fake news and disinformation, developing hybrid intelligence systems to integrate structured knowledge with natural language processing tools and deep learning algorithms.
