Nelson obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus in 2001 with honors. He completed his M.S. in 2002 and Ph.D. in 2005 in Electrical Computer Engineering at Michigan State University. From January 2006 to June 2011, Nelson was a faculty member at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez and participated in summer research programs with the faculty of the Air Force Research Laboratories (2006-2007), the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) in 2008, and the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) in 2009. In 2010, he was awarded the NSF Career award. His research interests include micro and nanometer-sized sensors and actuators (or transducers), characterization of smart multifunctional materials, and integration of microsystems.
