Dr. Nelson Tebbe

Biography

Nelson Tebbe is a Professor of Law at Cornell Law School, where he focuses on freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and general constitutional law. His book, "Religious Freedom in an Egalitarian Age" (Harvard University Press, 2017), examines contemporary conflicts regarding free exercise and equality law, advocating for robust civil rights protections that ensure traditionalists can dissent. His articles have appeared in prominent journals such as the Columbia Law Review, Cornell Law Review, and Harvard Law Review, among others. He is a media commentator and has written opinion pieces for various outlets, including The Atlantic, Slate, and the Washington Post. Tebbe co-organizes the Annual Law and Religion Roundtable and is a member of the executive committee of the AALS Section on Law and Religion. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Faculty Editors for the book series Corpus Juris: Humanities, Politics, and Law, published by Cornell University Press. He clerked for Judge John M. Walker Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and has practiced law with the American Civil Liberties Union and Davis Polk & Wardwell. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Tebbe holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in anthropology and sociology of religion from the University of Chicago.
