Biography

Nesrine Benkafadar obtained her Pharm.D from the University of Constantine in Algeria, subsequently joining the Institute of Neurosciences in Montpellier, France, to complete a master’s degree in Industrial Pharmacy. She then earned her Ph.D. in Biology and Health. Her research primarily focuses on establishing functional interactions between oxidative stress and DNA damage with cochlear cell aging. Benkafadar conducted postdoctoral research in Dr. Stefan Heller’s lab at Stanford University, where her current work revolves around studying early regenerative triggers in damaged avian cochlea. Her overarching goal is to characterize the series of events that trigger the execution of cochlear hair cell regeneration, ultimately investigating the key trigger genes that induce adult mammalian supporting cells in a damaged cochlea to reenter the cell cycle and regenerate hair cells. She has received several awards for her contributions to the field, including the NIDCD Early Career Research Award and the Katharine McCormick Advanced Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowship, among others.
