Biography

Néstor Castañeda is an Associate Professor of Latin American Political Economy and Director at the UCL Institute of the Americas. His research focuses on politics, inequality, and redistribution in developing economies, with particular emphasis on improving taxation systems to make them more efficient and equitable. He investigates factors contributing to the persistence of inequality in Latin America. In addition to his primary research, Castañeda has explored topics such as the global effects of economic growth on voter turnout and the factors influencing voter participation in Latin America. He also examines China's economic impact on the region and racial disparities in healthcare access in the United States. Castañeda is involved in a project funded by EPSRC to develop an international network investigating the responsible use of AI in government and industries in Latin America. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Latin American Economics, Political Economy of Economic Development, and Political Economy of Inequality.
