Biography

Neville Bethel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on the computational and experimental techniques used to explore protein ensembles and conformational changes. The Bethel lab aims to uncover the mechanisms by which proteins perform their functions through motion and structural alterations. His interdisciplinary interests include biochemistry, biophysics, macromolecular structure, and computational theoretical approaches. Bethel's work also involves de novo protein design, leveraging natural principles to create new proteins with functions not observed in nature. He has garnered several academic honors, including the 2024 San Diego Supercomputing Center Faculty Fellowship and the 2022 Hanna Gray Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
