Dr. Newell Washburn

Biography

Newell Washburn is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research group focuses on the development of new materials with novel compositions and architectures. The goals of his research include elucidating fundamental properties, understanding structure-function relationships, and exploring technological applications. He has a particular interest in the development of materials based on renewable resources. Current research areas involve surfactants, nanocomposites based on biopolymer lignin, non-fouling interfaces for medical diagnostics, high-affinity adsorbents for selective recovery of metals from aqueous systems, and conducting-polymer binders for battery electrodes.
