Biography

Dr. Newman Sze is a Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Brock University and holds a Canada Research Chair focused on the mechanisms underlying health and disease. His research aims to uncover fundamental questions in life sciences, particularly the root causes of aging and how it contributes to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and cancer. The main focus of his lab is the study of degenerative protein modifications (DPMs), which are spontaneous alterations that are closely tied to aging and chronic diseases. These DPMs play a significant role in aging by harming tissues and organs, yet they remain difficult to detect and analyze. To tackle these challenges, Dr. Sze's lab employs advanced 'omics' methods to systematically study these modifications. The ultimate goal is to transform scientific advances into innovative therapies and preventive strategies to help reduce the global burden of chronic diseases as the population ages. His research interests include immunotherapy for age-linked diseases, systems biology approaches, and utilizing large cohort datasets to identify new disease associations. He invites highly motivated MSc and PhD students with a passion for research in immunotherapy and big-data epidemiology to join his team.
