Biography

Niall Atkinson received his PhD in History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University in 2009. He began his teaching career at Texas Christian University before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago in 2010. His research and teaching focus on the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the experience of artistic environments in urban spaces during late medieval and Renaissance Italy. Atkinson's research investigates the role of soundscapes in Renaissance Florence and how acoustic environments shaped the meaning of built spaces and social communities. He is currently exploring the use of new digital technologies to visualize acoustic and spatial relationships. His long-term projects include studying urban disorientation in Renaissance cities and multi-media strategies to analyze how Italians navigated foreign territories. Collaborative projects have been supported by the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, including 'Interwoven: Sonic, Visual Textual Histories of the Indian Ocean World' and 'Visualizing Changing Spatial Social Ecology in Renaissance Florence.' Atkinson's book, 'The Noisy Renaissance,' was a finalist for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the College Art Association and he has held residential fellowships at both Harvard University's Villa Tatti and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence. He co-curated the U.S. Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.
