Niaz Banaei received his medical education from Stanford University School of Medicine, where he developed a passion for infectious diseases diagnostics and conducting diagnostic research on Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Mexico and South Africa. He completed his residency training in Clinical Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a postdoctoral fellowship focused on tuberculosis pathogenesis at New York University. Banaei then returned to Stanford University to join the Department of Pathology and currently serves as the Medical Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Stanford Health Care. He is also the Director of the Stanford Clinical Microbiology Fellowship and the Stanford Global Health Diagnostics Fellowship, and serves as the associate program director for the Clinical Pathology training program. His research interests include the development, assessment, and improvement of novel infectious diseases diagnostics and the immunopathogenesis of M. tuberculosis. He has authored 170 scientific articles and holds numerous invention patents. Additionally, he has received several teaching awards throughout his career.
