Biography

Nic Hayes is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo specializing in anthropology. She obtained her PhD in Anthropology with a concentration in Socio-cultural Anthropology from Boston University in 2011. Her research interests include sub-Saharan Africa, medical anthropology, gender and sexuality, inequality, ethnohistory, postcolonialism, environmental anthropology, kinship studies, and human rights. Nic's early research focused on the complex interplay of Malawi's intimate behavior against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic, utilizing a combination of 18 months of participant observation, interviews, and archival research. She has drawn parallels between the AIDS epidemic in Southern Africa and the global COVID-19 pandemic, currently investigating cross-cultural responses to disease, conspiracy theories surrounding government initiatives, and anti-vaccination sentiments to inform policy for epidemic preparedness. Recently, she developed a Canadian field site that culminated in a three-part series of case studies on affordable housing in the Waterloo Region.
