Cochlear implants have completely transformed the lives of individuals with severe to profound deafness over the past 30 years. Leading a multidisciplinary service that offers bone conduction hearing devices and implants, I support over 1300 auditory implant users, ranging in age from children to individuals over 90 years old. Witnessing the successes of these implant users is immensely rewarding. As an academic coordinator for the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS), I oversee teaching activities for a team of 50 staff members. This role was created to foster close collaborations within the university's Audiology Department. My work provides students with real-world patient experiences while empowering implant users as guest lecturers and offering invaluable research opportunities. Additionally, I developed a 12-week clinical placement program which has seen past trainees excel in securing substantive clinical research positions globally. My expertise has benefitted countries like Singapore, Saudi Arabia, China, Canada, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
