Dr. Nicholas Barber

Biography

Nick Barber joined Oxford Law Faculty in 1998 as a Fixed Term Fellow at Brasenose before moving to a tenured Fellowship at Trinity College in 2000. In 2013, he was appointed University Lecturer in Constitutional Law, and in 2017 was promoted to Professor of Constitutional Law Theory. His academic journey also includes a visiting position at Renmin University in China from 2012 to 2013. Between 2019 and 2023, he served as Associate Dean for Research and held the position of Senior Proctor for 2025-2026. Barber delivered a keynote address for the Dutch Association of Constitutional Law in 2023 and has been invited as the James Meralls Visiting Fellow at Melbourne University in 2024. He is scheduled to give the Sir Richard Ground Lecture in the Turks and Caicos in 2025 and to hold a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship from 2026 to 2029, focusing on the theme 'Reason and Emotion in the Formation of Constitutional Identity'. His lectures and publications, including the book 'Constitutional State' in 2011 and 'Principles of Constitutionalism' in 2018, have made significant contributions to the field, with the latest work 'United Kingdom Constitution: Introduction' published in late 2021 and a Chinese edition expected in 2026. Moreover, his editorial work includes the United Kingdom Constitutional Law Blog, which he co-founded. Barber has engaged in substantial research in Public Law, Constitutional Law, and related areas, influencing legal thought and practice significantly.
