Nick’s teaching and research are focused on the revitalization and resurgence of Indigenous knowledges through community-based and land-based research education. His doctoral research concentrated on the revitalization of the Nation’s community’s traditional fishing practices. Utilizing a framework for Indigenous Resurgence, Nick's doctoral research project emphasized the restoration of SX̱OLE. His dissertation narrates the story of a 'researcher' who brought together disappearing knowledge of SX̱OLE and reinvigorated cross-border cooperation with W̱SÁNEĆ Xwelemi relatives. This effort resulted in the ȻWENÁLYEN, which is a Reef Net Captain ceremony that enabled the coordination of a community-based initiative for fishing SX̱OLE in Canadian waters for the first time in 100 years. The project was community-based, involving the reconnection of elders, youth, and community members, and marked the beginning of a longer-term journey towards intergenerational resilience.
