Dr. Nicholas Cronk

Biography

Nicholas Cronk is a renowned scholar in French Literature with a focus on European Enlightenment Studies. He serves as the Director of the Voltaire Foundation and is a Professor at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. With a D.Phil from Oxford, Cronk is actively engaged in critical editing and scholarly research related to Voltaire, specializing in his historical writings, poetry, and correspondence. He is known for his role as the General Editor of the Complete Works of Voltaire, overseeing the publication of over fifty volumes. His academic contributions include several edited volumes and critical editions of key works by Voltaire. In addition to his extensive publication record, Cronk has been awarded the AHRC Fellowship for his project on Voltaire's radical Enlightenment, which involves critical re-interpretation of his writings. He is a fellow at St. Edmund Hall and a member of various scholarly associations, including the Société des études voltairiennes. His work encompasses themes of French Enlightenment and historical book culture, often exploring the intersection of visual material and literary discourse.
