Biography

Nicholas Harris is a Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, specializing in Earth & Atmospheric Sciences. His research primarily focuses on sedimentology, sedimentary geochemistry, and petroleum geology, with a particular interest in the origin of black shales and the study of organic-rich shales in various geological basins, including the west African rift basins and the Upper Devonian Woodford Shale in Texas. His ongoing projects involve identifying the signatures of sea-level cycles in basinal shales through sedimentological and geochemical methods. He has also conducted studies on the diagenetic alteration of clastic rocks and tight gas sandstone reservoirs across North America. Harris integrates petrographic and geochemical analyses in his research to explore subsurface gas migration processes and enhance understanding of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs in Western Canada. He teaches courses in the Integrated Petroleum Geosciences (IPG) program, emphasizing a practical understanding of geological principles and their application to real data sets. His published work spans major journals including AAPG Bulletin and Marine Petroleum Geology.
