Nicholas Henriksen is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. He earned his PhD in Linguistics from Indiana University in 2010 and has held academic positions since then, focusing on Spanish phonetics and phonology, especially the phonetics-phonology interface. His research tackles significant questions such as how language users hold abstract representations of sounds and how phonetic detail influences phonological grammar. His early works examined intonational structures within the autosegmental-metrical framework, leading to a broader exploration of sound change in Andalusian Spanish. Henriksen is also involved in large collaborative projects, including a major initiative examining the linguistic traits of Afrikaans-Spanish bilinguals in Patagonia, Argentina, collaborating with over 50 researchers. He has published in prestigious journals and has co-edited volumes on intonational grammar in Ibero-Romance languages. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Early Career Award from the Linguistic Society of America in 2021.
