Biography

Nicholas Karn is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specializing in the institutional law and culture of England during the central Middle Ages, particularly between 1000 and 1250. His research explores the impact of church institutions, the roles churchmen played between 1100 and 1400, and the legal documents and charters from the 12th century that provide insight into these dynamics. Notably, he has worked on the edition and translation of the Leges Henrici Primi, one of the most important legal texts surviving from this period. His studies focus on how decision-making processes within courts reflected and shaped local power structures and how these interacted with royal authority. Recently, he completed a significant project examining the institutional law in Anglo-Norman England, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, which proposed new interpretations of the formation of legal institutions following the Norman Conquest. He is actively publishing articles in press and is currently engaged in research regarding the Ely episcopal acta from 1256 to 1337, which aims to deepen understanding of the role of legal and institutional frameworks in medieval England.
