Biography

Nick Long is an Associate Professor at the London School of Economics, specializing in social, psychological, and medical anthropology, with a focus on Indonesia, the Malay World, and Aotearoa New Zealand. He is currently completing a significant ethnographic study of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, based on 18 months of fieldwork with hypnosis practitioners in Indonesia. His research, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), aims to understand how hypnopsychological discourse shapes social life in contemporary Indonesia. Over his academic career, Nick has built long-standing relationships with the people and places he studies, conducting research since 2005. His work often explores how subjectivities and social relations are influenced by political changes, particularly following the end of Suharto’s authoritarian regime. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-founded the Care And Responsibility Under Lockdown (CARUL) Collective, which investigated the impact of pandemic control measures in Aotearoa New Zealand. He has published widely on topics related to policing and funerary practices. His academic interests encompass performance, photography, and art as mediums of anthropological representation, as well as the potential of digital technologies in these fields. Nick is keen to engage with prospective graduate students interested in related research areas, particularly those focused on Indonesia and the Malay World.
