Nicholas Makhoul is a dual degreed boarded Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon with a subspecialization in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He received his BSc with distinction from the University of Alberta in Biochemistry, DMD from McGill University, and MD from the University of Michigan. He completed clinical residency training in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Michigan, followed by an accredited fellowship in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Surgery at the same institution. Currently situated at the Montreal General Hospital, he serves as the director of the McGill Oral Maxillofacial Residency Program, practicing as an academic maxillofacial surgeon. His research interests focus on utilizing tissue engineering principles to achieve functional and aesthetic reconstructions for patients with missing hard and soft tissues due to tumor ablation, trauma, or congenital deformities. He is dedicated to forming collaborations with researchers across various disciplines to develop novel techniques in composite tissue engineering. Additionally, Dr. Makhoul is working with CAOMS to develop an oral oncology database in collaboration with specialists in biostatistics and epidemiology, aimed at assessing the outcomes of maxillofacial oncology patients and identifying factors that contribute to an increased quality and quantity of life, with the goal of designing future randomized controlled trials based on the variables identified in the database.
