Biography

Nicholas Manton is a Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge. He has held various positions within the department since 1987, including University Lecturer and Reader, and chaired the High Energy Physics group from 2002 to 2017. Manton's research primarily focuses on theoretical mathematical physics, especially in classical and quantum field theory with applications to particle and nuclear physics. His notable work includes the study of topological solitons in field theory, such as Skyrmions, and explores models of atomic nuclei as quantized solitons in nonlinear field theory. Collaborating with students and esteemed colleagues, he has significantly advanced the understanding of solitons within the framework of the Standard Model. Manton's contributions extend to computational methods for examining the dynamics of solitons and their implications in particle physics. His work has led to developments in understanding the properties of nuclei, such as Carbon-12 and Oxygen-16, through innovative mathematical approaches. Manton is a fellow of the Royal Society and has received numerous accolades throughout his career for his impactful research.
