Biography

Nicholas Marston is a Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, where he also serves as the Director of Postgraduate Studies. He has a rich academic background, having attended Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, as a Choral Exhibitioner after being educated in a grammar school in Penzance, Cornwall. He completed his Ph.D. dissertation on sketches of Beethoven’s Op. 109 piano sonata, which was later published as a book in 1995. In 1984, he was awarded the Trevelyan Research Fellowship at Selwyn College, but he resigned in 1986 to take up an inaugural British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship at King’s College London. He became a full-time University Lecturer in Music at the University of Exeter in 1989 before moving to Oxford in 1994, where he held positions as a University Lecturer (and later Reader) in Music at St Peter’s College and as a College Lecturer at St Edmund Hall. In 2001, he returned to King’s College, Cambridge. His research interests include Beethoven manuscript studies, theory and analysis with an emphasis on Schenkerian analysis, Schumann's works, especially his Lieder and choral music, and the history of the choral foundation at King’s College. Additionally, he is a contributor to Schenker Documents Online and serves on the Advisory Panel for the journal Music Analysis, where he is the Editor-in-Chief of Beethoven Forum.
