Biography

Nicholas May is an anthropological historian specializing in Indigenous cultures in Canada. His research focuses on the religious and cultural transformation of British Columbia, particularly in relation to the Nisga’a people. His dissertation, 'Feasting Aam Heaven: Christianization of the Nisga’a, 1860-1920,' received the John Bullen Prize in 2014 for outstanding PhD thesis submitted at a Canadian university, and is prepared for publication with the University of British Columbia Press. He joined Simon Fraser University in 2021, bringing prior teaching experience from the University of British Columbia, McGill University, and the University of Toronto. He has contributed scholarly work on the intersections of religion, colonialism, and Indigenous identity, including articles in notable journals and participation in Canadian biography projects.
