Biography

Nicholas Veldhuis holds the position of Associate Professor and ARC Future Fellow at Monash University. He serves as the co-director of the Integrated Neurogenic Mechanisms Laboratory and leads the Endosomal Signalling Program at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent Bio-Nano Science Technology. His broad research program focuses on the role of G Protein-Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) in pain and inflammation, particularly how receptor localization affects signaling outcomes. Veldhuis is studying the cellular mechanisms that lead to pain in Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare skin disorder, using transgenic mouse models to identify new therapeutic targets. He also researches mechanosensing ion channels and their role in gut motility and inflammation. His expertise encompasses cell signaling, molecular pharmacology, live cell imaging, protein engineering, and nanomedicine. Veldhuis is dedicated to developing specialized drug delivery systems to offer effective alternatives to traditional analgesics and improve the understanding of neuro-immune interactions in the gastrointestinal tract.
