Nicholas White was born in the UK and completed his schooling and undergraduate studies in New Zealand, where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors from the University of Otago. He worked with Sally Brooker on the study of transition metal complexes and triazole-based ligands. Nicholas then moved to the University of Oxford for his DPhil, supervised by Paul Beer, focusing on the synthesis of catenanes and rotaxanes involving hydrogen-halogen bond donors for anion recognition. After his doctoral studies, he became a Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where he researched self-assembly and supramolecular materials in Mark MacLachlan's group. In October 2015, he was appointed as a Lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU). His research mainly explores supramolecular chemistry, particularly anion binding, hydrogen bonding, and self-assembly. He teaches coordination chemistry to second-year undergraduates and porous materials to third-year students. Outside of academia, Nicholas enjoys coffee, music from artists like Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, and outdoor activities such as running and bouldering in Canberra, which he considers a great place for both city and nature activities.
