Biography

Nick Buenfeld is an Emeritus Professor of Concrete Structures and a Distinguished Research Fellow at Imperial College London, where he has had a prolific career contributing to the field of civil and environmental engineering. His expertise lies primarily in concrete structures, with a significant focus on durability and deterioration processes of concrete materials. Over the years, he has provided expert consultation to various stakeholders, including lawyers and government agencies, advising on issues related to construction defects and longevity of concrete structures. Prof. Buenfeld has been notably involved in major infrastructure projects worldwide, such as the Riyadh Metro and the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, highlighting his international consulting experience. With over 250 publications, his research addresses critical aspects of concrete technology, emphasizing methods for assessing durability, monitoring deterioration, and improving repair techniques. He has supervised numerous PhD and MSc candidates and has been influential in curriculum development in his department.
