Dr. Nick Couldry

Biography

Nick Couldry is Professor of Media, Communications and Social Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and an Emeritus Professorial Research Fellow. He is a sociologist whose work focuses on media culture and the institutions that shape media communications. His research has been pivotal in exploring the social dimensions of symbolic power and how it is historically embedded in media institutions. Over the past decade, Couldry has increasingly concentrated on ethical questions arising from data practices, including both Big Data and small data. He has authored and edited 17 books and numerous journal articles, and is a recognized figure in discussions about media audiences, platform power, and the implications of data colonialism. Couldry's current research interests include the societal impacts of digital media and the political challenges presented by the representation of power through media. His teaching has included postgraduate-level courses on Media, Data and Social Order, and he has supervised numerous doctoral students in related fields. With a rich history of visiting positions at prestigious institutions around the world, Couldry is well-regarded in international academic circles.
