Nick Crossley completed his BA and PhD at the University of Sheffield, specifically within the Sociology Department. He worked from 1993 to 1998 as a lecturer in sociology, philosophy, and psychiatry at the Centre for Psychotherapeutic Studies (part of the Department of Psychiatry) in Sheffield. He joined the Sociology Department at the University of Manchester in September 1998 and progressed through the academic ranks to become a professor in 2005. Crossley currently leads the REF for Sociology and is heavily involved with the Mitchell Centre for Social Network Analysis, co-founding and co-directing it. He runs weekly seminars with external speakers during term time and organizes both internal and external training courses in social network analysis. His specific research interests include the sociology of music, social networks and network analysis, and relational sociology. He has published two books through Manchester University Press, focusing on music worlds and their social dynamics. He is also engaged in major grant applications exploring social networks among electronic musicians and investigating the revival of raves, analyzing the social structures surrounding these phenomena. In addition, Crossley has supervised 28 successful PhD students and is currently supervising six PhD candidates. He teaches undergraduate and master's level courses on topics related to sociology and cultural identity, and enjoys the teaching process.
