Biography

Nick Donaldson studied Engineering Electrical Sciences at Cambridge University. He worked at the Medical Research Council's Neurological Prostheses Unit under the direction of Professor G.S. Brindley until its closure in 1992. After this, he joined University College London to lead the Implanted Devices Group within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. He completed his PhD at UCL in 1990, focusing on implanted device technology and the use of natural nerve signals for input. His research interests include stimulators for nerve roots and spinal cord in paraplegia, utilizing electrical stimulation to promote recreational exercise in paralyzed legs, and developing methods to encourage functional neurological recovery from injury. Nick has published over 90 papers in peer-reviewed journals covering fields such as electrical and electronic design, materials science, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and neural signal processing. He has served as an investigator on thirty projects at UCL since 1992.
