Biography

Professor Nick Drake obtained a BSc (Honours) in Environmental Science from Plymouth Polytechnic in 1983, followed by a Master of Applied Science in Geochemical Exploration from the University of New South Wales in 1986. From 1986 to 1992, he worked as a research fellow focused on remote sensing research in the Department of Geography at Reading University, where he developed algorithms for improved image classification and geomorphological mapping. He completed a part-time PhD titled ‘Mapping and Monitoring Surface Cover Types and Processes in Southern Tunisia Using Remote Sensing’. In 1992, he joined King's College London's Department of Geography, where he became a Reader in 2000 and was promoted to Professor in 2013. His research interests span the theoretical and practical aspects of remote sensing, geographical information systems, and spatial modeling, with a specific focus on arid environments, including the Sahara Desert. He has contributed to significant projects such as the Sahara Megalakes Project, involving multiple international universities to research ancient lakes. He is also a member of the editorial boards for various academic journals.
