Biography

Nick Evans is an early medieval historian specializing in the Caucasus and Eurasian steppe. He is currently a Lecturer in European History at Birkbeck, University of London, and holds a College Research Associate position at King's College, Cambridge. He received his DPhil in History from the University of Oxford in 2016. Nick has held research posts at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Clare College, Cambridge, as well as teaching positions at King's College London and the University of Leeds. His research interests include Ukrainian history through the Ukrainian History Global Initiative, which seeks to provide decolonized, long-term historical narratives of Ukrainian territories. Nick's current project examines the nomadic empire of the Khazars, who dominated these territories during the early Middle Ages, and builds upon his previously published monograph on the early medieval North Caucasus, which is currently under review with Oxford University Press. He is also editing a special issue of Transactions of the Royal Historical Society related to his research.
