Biography

Nick Fraser is an active and engaging presence in the Toronto new jazz and improvised music community for over twenty years. He has performed with a veritable 'who's who' of Canadian jazz and international artists, including Tony Malaby, Kris Davis, William Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Marilyn Crispell, Anthony Braxton, Donny McCaslin, and David Binney. A JUNO award winner, he was awarded the 2017 Chalmers Arts Fellowship. Fraser's recorded works as a leader include Owls Daylight (1997), Nick Fraser Justin Haynes faking (2004), Towns Villages (2013), Continents (2015), Starer (2016), Life Long? (2017), and Zoning (2019). For ten years, he co-led the group Drumheller, which released four critically acclaimed recordings. His projects include Peripheral Vision, Eucalyptus, Titanium Riot, Brodie West Quintet, and Ugly Beauties with Marilyn Lerner and Matt Brubeck. He has performed on 80 commercially released recordings and has worked as the musical director for Calgary-based Decidedly Jazz Danceworks productions like Juliet & Romeo (2017) and Mimic (2018). Praised for his talent, Fraser's drumming is described as embodying whole body and soul, hinting at an enigmatic streak with sensitive percussion that displays an innate sense of form.
