Biography

Professor Nick Hawes completed his BSc in 1999 and PhD in 2004 in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Birmingham. After completing post-doctoral positions at MIT's Media Lab Europe in Dublin and the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, he led a research group focused on AI applications in robotics, advancing to the title of Reader in Autonomous Intelligent Robotics in 2009. In September 2017, Nick joined the University of Oxford, becoming an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow at Pembroke College. He was appointed Director of the Department of Engineering Science in 2022. In 2013, he received the Lord Kelvin Award for his communication skills to general audiences, highlighting his role as an active researcher in the field.
