Dr. Nick Shepherd

Biography

Nick Shepherd is an Associate Professor trained in archaeology with significant expertise across various transdisciplinary fields, including Heritage Studies, Archaeology, and Environmental Humanities. Based at Aarhus University, he is recognized as a global scholar with a distinguished career, previously holding positions as a Mandela Fellow at Harvard University and a visiting professor at institutions like Brown University and Colgate University. His research interests prominently feature questions of social justice, examining historical injustices related to colonialism and apartheid, as well as current challenges posed by the climate emergency. Shepherd engages with themes surrounding the Anthropocene and has pioneered the organization of walking seminars that involve an interdisciplinary mix of scholars, artists, curators, and policymakers. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cape Town. He is currently involved in several projects focused on critical African Studies and the political poetics of water in the Anthropocene, reflecting his ongoing commitment to exploring complex socio-political landscapes through an archaeological lens.
