Biography

Nick Tyler is the Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering at University College London, where he investigates how people interact with their immediate environments. He leads the UCL Centre for Transport Studies, bringing together a diverse team of researchers who study various aspects of public transport. He has established a life-scale laboratory known as PAMELA (Pedestrian Movement Environment Laboratory), which allows for extensive research on pedestrian infrastructure and behavior. In 2022, his work contributed to the UKCRIC programme, resulting in the creation of the PEARL (Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory), a 44,000m3 facility enabling in-depth studies on human responses to infrastructure and immersive multisensory environments. His research is transdisciplinary, involving collaboration with civil engineers, psychologists, architects, musicians, and other professionals. Nick holds a PhD from University College London, focusing on high-capacity bus systems using artificial intelligence. His achievements include participation in the EU-funded 'City Design Latin America 2000' competition, and he has been involved in multiple international projects across Latin America, Japan, China, and Europe. He is a Fellow of several prestigious organizations and was appointed CBE in 2011 for services to technology.
