Biography

Nick's main research focuses on the way language is used in organizations, particularly within sports teams. He has investigated leadership development, the construction of team identity within sports contexts, and negotiation concerning local politeness norms and power hierarchies. Currently, Nick is examining patterns of language variation and change, specifically how the English definite article is realized in Australian English. In his teaching role, he convenes courses such as LING1121 Language Myths and Realities and LING2219 Introduction to Sociolinguistics. He is also a co-author with Janet Holmes on Introduction to Sociolinguistics, and is interested in supervising research projects related to language and communication in sports contexts, leadership discourse, sociolinguistic variation and change, sociopragmatics, and taboo language.
