Dr. Nickie Charles

Biography

Nickie Charles is known for her extensive research on women and gender studies, with a focus on gender relations, work, and the home. She has been involved in feminist social movements aimed at enacting social change. Recently, her research has explored gendered political processes within the context of devolution and has increasingly included interests in human-animal relationships, particularly focusing on how non-human animals are viewed as kin. Her work encompasses several areas, such as the dynamics of paid and unpaid work, family structures, feminist movements, and methodologies regarding human-animal relations. Notably, she led a Leverhulme-funded project titled 'Shaping inter-species connectedness: Training cultures and the emergence of new forms of human-animal relations,' which spanned from 2018 to 2021. Her academic contributions involve various publications and monographs, including works on gender divisions, social change, and feminist perspectives on social policy. Charles is currently supervising several PhD candidates, focusing on domestic abuse's impact on workplaces, gender changes in various cultural contexts, and the interplay between gender, politics, and environmental issues. Her critical works have been widely recognized in both the sociological and feminist academic communities, furthering discussions on gender and societal norms.
