Dr. Nicky Marsh

Biography

Nicky Marsh is a Professor of Contemporary Literary and Cultural Studies with a focus on the intersections of culture and economics. Her research explores the cultural representations of risk, money, finance, and markets through various lenses, such as gender and feminism in today's economy. She is known for her extensive work on fiction relating to finance, highlighted by her monograph 'Credit Culture: Politics of Money in American Fiction of the 1970s' published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. Her research investigates how economic concepts such as money, risk, credit, and debt are transformed into cultural narratives. Marsh's most recent project delves into literature's engagement with financialization in the context of housing, particularly its representation of homes as assets. She has also collaborated on projects that investigate finance's representation in the public sphere, including the co-curation of a national exhibition titled 'Show Money: The Image of Finance.' Additionally, she is involved in large-scale research projects like the History of Financial Advice and the AHRC-funded studies on cultural economies and community identities. In teaching, Marsh specializes in twentieth-century literature, film, and visual culture, emphasizing contemporary political, gender, and economic issues.
