Biography

Nicky van Es is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research is part of an NWO-funded project titled 'Locating Imagination: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Literary, Film and Music Tourism.' Nicky holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Research Master's degree in Sociology of Culture, Media and Arts from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her Bachelor's thesis focused on income inequality and mental health issues in developed countries, while her Master's thesis analyzed the impact of online video games on national identity. She investigates how contemporary popular literature influences tourists’ imaginations and encourages them to visit locales depicted in novels. Nicky also explores the roles of local authorities and agencies in creating and sustaining 'literary experiences'.
