Biography

Nico Roos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences at Maastricht University (UM). He joined the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) in 1995 and has coordinated the Agent Technology group since 1998. In 2009, he established the Robots and Agents Interaction research group Robotlab. In collaboration with Pieter Collins, he initiated the Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) research theme in 2017. His educational background includes a PhD in handling inconsistent and uncertain information, awarded in 1991. Roos focuses on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, along with research areas including Planning and Scheduling, Gaits in Humanoid Robots, and Model-Based Diagnosis. His recent research is centered around Argumentation Learning and Defeasible Rules within the context of XAI. Between 2008 and 2010, he served as the Director of Studies for the Bachelor program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the corresponding Master programs. Over the years, Roos has contributed significantly to various boards and committees at UM, including the Board of DACS and the faculty council. He has participated in national programs for research funding, exemplified by his role in the NWO - Vidi TTW and NWO - NWA-ORC committees.
