Dr. Nicola Burgess Brown

Biography

Nicola Burgess-Brown is a Professorial Research Fellow at University College London specializing in Protein Science and Pharmaceutical Biochemistry. Born in Northern Ireland, she earned her BSc Hons in Applied Biochemical Sciences from the University of Ulster, followed by a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from the University of Nottingham. Nicola has worked extensively in both academia and industry, including a role at SmithKline Beecham and as part of the Oncology Targets team at Oxford GlycoSciences, focusing on the generation of therapeutic antibodies. She returned to the University of Oxford to lead a team within the Structural Genomics Consortium, where for 17 years, she developed high-throughput platforms for expressing challenging human proteins for structural and functional analyses. In September 2021, Nicola led the Enzymology Protein Engineering Team at Exact Sciences Innovation in Oxford, producing proteins for cancer diagnostic research. She will rejoin the Structural Genomics Consortium as Chief Operating Officer for Protein Sciences in April 2025. Throughout her career, she has emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in research.
