Biography

Nicola Calabretta is a Full Professor in Electro-Optical Communication Systems and a Senior Research Fellow at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His expertise encompasses telecommunications engineering, electrical engineering, and optical engineering. His research predominantly focuses on smart optical data communications, telecom networks, and optical signal processing. He has worked extensively on highly spectral efficient multi-level modulation formats, high-speed electronics for processing novel labeling techniques, and FPGA implementations for scheduling algorithms related to low latency control in large port optical switches. His notable contributions also include the development of optical interconnects, photonic integrated wavelength selectors, and flexible bandwidth optical nodes for metro networks. His research group aims to enhance the performance of optical metro/access networks and data center networks. Nicola earned his PhD at TU/e in 2004, concentrating on all-optical signal processing in optical packet switching. Before joining TU/e, he was involved in research at DTU Fotonik in Denmark, focusing on Radio-over-Fiber. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy, where he specialized in wavelength division multiplexing, passive optical networks, and advanced modulation techniques for optical transmission systems.
