Biography

Nicola Christie is a behavioural scientist with a background in psychology, specializing in transport safety and injury prevention through a public health lens. Her research encapsulates the aetiology and epidemiology of unintentional injuries and their implications for policy and practice. She has developed a keen interest in understanding the safety impacts of sustainable and healthy mobility. Nicola employs exploratory and ethnographic techniques to analyze complex social phenomena and human factors related to the causes and consequences of injuries, utilizing mixed methods approaches including evaluations of natural experiments and quasi-experimental qualitative designs. With over 16 years at the Transport Research Laboratory and 10 years at Surrey University, she has fulfilled significant roles such as Director of Engagement, Director of the Centre of Transport Studies, Director of Research, and Director of the pan UCL Transport Institute, all being the first female in these positions. Currently, she serves as the President of the London Road Safety Council and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, in addition to her membership in the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety. Nicola is also a member of the Department for Transport's College of Experts and serves as an International Fellow for the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences in Japan.
