Nicola Nymalm joined the University of Edinburgh in May 2024. She was previously an Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor in War Studies at the Swedish Defence University. Her research interests include relations between established and emerging powers, utilizing critical approaches in International Relations (IR), International Political Economy (IPE), and security/military studies. Nicola has authored the book 'Japan Problem' 'China Threat'? published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2020, and co-edited the 'Routledge Handbook on Foreign Policy in the Indo-Pacific', released by Routledge in 2023. Her works have appeared in journals such as International Political Sociology, International Studies Review, International Studies, and the Journal of International Relations Development. Nicola holds a PhD in Political Science/International Relations from Kiel University, Germany, awarded in July 2015, with funding from the Finnish Cultural Foundation in Helsinki. She also has an MA in Contemporary History, Chinese Studies, and European Law from Humboldt University Free University Berlin, and a Master of Peace and Security Studies (M.P.S.) from the University of Hamburg. Furthermore, she serves as Programme Co-Director for the MSc in International Relations and supervises current PhD students.
