Biography

Nicola earned a PhD from Carleton University in Cultural Mediations, where she studied performance theory and vocality, particularly the cultural implications of engaging in performative free vocal improvisation in public spaces. She has been a music therapy clinician since 1985 and is certified by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists. She is also a certified counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and a registered psychotherapist in Ontario. Since 2010, she has been a part-time professor at Concordia University in the Creative Arts Therapies program, teaching various courses, including 'Introduction to Music Therapy' at Carleton University. Nicola has managed projects like the Adaptive Use Musical Instrument Research Consortium and has served on editorial boards such as the Canadian Journal of Music Therapy. Her educational contributions also extend to workshops and supervision of music therapy interns and professionals. Her research interests include the use of voice in music therapy and the application of mindfulness practices through improvisatory singing.
