Biography

Nicola Smart is a Professor of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Oxford, where she leads research into the mechanisms of cardiac ischemic injury and vascular development. She has a background in signal transduction pathways, having completed her PhD in investigating protein kinase C signaling. Following her doctoral studies, Professor Smart conducted postdoctoral research at King’s College London, focusing on the mechanisms underlying cardiac ischaemic injury. She subsequently joined the UCL-Institute of Child Health, where she contributed to research on myocardial and coronary vessel development. Her research has been pivotal in identifying cardiovascular progenitors and understanding how to manipulate regenerative responses in adult hearts. She received the British Heart Foundation Senior Basic Science Research Fellowship and has been recognized with multiple awards, including the British Cardiovascular Society’s Michael Davies Early Career Award and the British Atherosclerosis Society John French Lecture.
