Nicola Smart is a Professor of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Oxford, specializing in the mechanisms of PKC signaling. Her research began with a PhD from the University of London, followed by postdoctoral studies at King's College London, where she explored signal transduction pathways that underlie cardiac ischemic injury. She later joined Professor Paul Riley’s group at the UCL-Institute of Child Health to study myocardial and coronary vessel development. Her studies focus on embryonic heart development and identifying cardiovascular progenitors, leading to insights on manipulating regenerative responses in adults. Her work has uncovered ways to reactivate dormant adult epicardial cells as a source of cardiac progenitors to repair injured hearts, as well as mechanisms that maintain vessel stability throughout adult life. Since joining the Department in June 2012, she has been awarded the British Heart Foundation Senior Basic Science Research Fellowship, with renewals for further five years, and has received multiple honors including the BHF Research Fellow of the Year award in 2011 and the British Cardiovascular Society’s Michael Davies Early Career Award in 2012.
